This project was deeply personal, as it's the homestead of the Canales family. Jose and Christina started with sketches to plan the space and how it would function along with years of photos taken at some of their favorite places like San Miguel and Santa Fe for inspiration. Despite all the planning, they still redesigned many architectural elements on the fly in the field as the house was being built.

Many of the pieces in the home are custom, designed by Christina. Ideation typically starts with sketches, then turns into drawings and ends with a collaboration of fabricators for different types of textiles available and best methods of construction.

Places for quiet time...

The den is painted in a rich deep sea, accented with warm hemlock walls and thick rugs. A heavy coffee table is juxtaposed with a floating club chair that makes the space feel perfect for a reading room or a quite place to watch movies.

...and places for gatherings.

The dining room and the living room are conjoined as a great room, which allows for larger gatherings in one space. Floor to ceiling windows and doors on both sides of the room allow the outside to come in. It also provides a view through the house from the pool to the woods.

The master bedroom takes in large views with floor to ceiling windows and a back door to a private patio. The high windows behind the bed flood the room with light and allow the giant heritage oaks to come in.
